Noise dosimeter badge for capturing noise exposure levels of workers

By: Robert Dunn

Innovative Personal Noise Dosimeter Badge: unique shape, innovative functional design from Pulsar Instruments

Pulsar Instruments plc have made assessing and capturing the true noise exposure of workers in a range of settings simple with its innovative noise dosimeter: Model 22 Noise Dosimeter System.

Traditional systems rely on large, cumbersome units using cables and separate microphones which can easily become damaged or tangled in machinery. This revolutionary personal noise exposure dosimeter is different! It is a self-contained device also known as Personal Sound Exposure Meters (PSEM), that has no cables, displays or controls, making it the perfect solution for occupational noise dosimetry, as the unit cannot be tampered easily with during measurements.

Such a device is ideal for use in settings ranging from construction sites, mines, transportation (highway maintenance) and even entertainment venues (e.g. an orchestra – where an ‘All Black‘ version is available).

This Model 22 noise dosimeter badge communicates with an infra-red Decibel Reader Unit – which uses similar technology to a television remote control. The Reader Unit controls the badges in order to program, calibrate, start-stop, download and store noise measurements.

All key measurement parameters taken can be viewed on the large clear backlit screen of the Reader Unit, which also displays a time history graph of the worker’s daily noise exposure.

The Reader Unit contains an integral acoustic calibrator allowing the badge to be calibrated prior to and following each measurement in accordance with international regulations. Worldwide Occupational or Industrial Noise Regulations require the typical daily exposure of an individual worker to be determined. The Pulsar noise dosimeter badge automatically achieves this by computing the Daily Exposure for European legislation or the Time Weighted Average for US-based legislation; the badges are tri exchange rates of 3dB, 4dB and 5dB.

User-friendly Pulsar AnalyzerPlus software for reporting data

Noise dosimetry measurements are only the beginning. Pulsar Instruments’ effective, user-friendly software package Pulsar AnalyzerPlus software allows users to analyse and transform the raw data into informative report formats, simplifying a potentially complex and time-consuming analysis process.

Comprehensive ‘Time History’ information allows safety professionals to establish when key noise problems occur during a worker’s day. The additional ‘C’ weighted peak Time History allows users to fully assess risks from impulsive noise in the workplace.

Key features:

  • Robust, compact and lightweight
  • Tamper-proof – no cables or controls
  • User-friendly functional design
  • “Shake to wake” to extend battery life
  • Measurement range 70db(A) to 130dB(A) and 120dB(C) to 140dB(C) peak
  • Measures: Leq, LEX,8h (LEP,d), LAE (SEL), Exposure & Estimated Exposure, % dose and Estimated % dose.

Optional accessories include:

A Keyfob remote control – this allows the user to start and stop the dosimeter without the Reader Unit. This is particularly useful in situations where there is a risk of damage to the Reader or additional control units are required.

Windshield – we have designed a special windshield to sit over the badge which will protect it from dust, moisture and other contaminants.

Why you should choose this noise dosimeter

This noise dosimeter system is perfect for the Health & Safety Manager who has limited time for noise measurement or where workers are on the move as part of their job and, as such, make the monitoring of noise with a conventional hand-held meter difficult to undertake. The badge can be started at the beginning of a shift and stopped at the end.  Data can be downloaded from the Reader unit as and when required.  It really is that simple.
