Personal Noise Dosimeters

A Noise Dosimeter measures and stores sound pressure levels (SPL), and then by processing these measurements over time, provides a cumulative noise exposure reading for a certain period of time, such as a normal working day or week.

Why do you need them?

Noise dosimeters are personal sound exposure meters (PSEM) for use in working environments where it is simply not practical to follow someone around with a sound level meter all day but where compliance with noise regulations is still vital.  The HSE identifies noise dosimetry as a useful way to calculate an individual’s exposure to noise for the Employers’ responsibilities under the Noise at Work Regulations 2005. They should tell you the noise levels over an entire working day, as well as time history to help health and safety managers assess noise exposure.

Why should you choose Pulsar Instruments as your supplier?

All of our range meet the applicable international standards including IEC 61252 and ANSI S1.25: 1991. They are user-friendly, tamper-proof and cable-free; they are mounted on an individual worker’s shoulder, close to their ears, where they continuously monitor their ‘A’ frequency-weighted sound exposure levels. We offer dosimeters that are data logging so they collect time history data of the noise dose. Typical uses are in factories, industrial units, warehouses, large construction sites, and any other places where workers are exposed to different noisy machinery over their working shifts. They are also ideal for use with lone workers and those who are difficult to reach (for instance, those working in remote sites or in vehicle cabins).

Of course, please do let us know if you have any additional questions with regards to the noise dosimeters and we will be more than happy to help you further.

Noise dosemeters are Class 2, perfect for occupational noise measurements and conducting noise exposure assessments. Class 1 Noise dosemeters are not available.

Yes. There are different types of calibration. You need to field calibrate your dosemeter every time you take a measurement series with an acoustic calibrator. With the Pulsar NoisePen you are prompted to field calibrate and then programme your meter. With the Pulsar Noise Dosemeter System the reader unit has a built in calibrator which you use every time you set up the badges and download the measurements.

You will need to have your noise dosemeters factory calibrated (periodic verification) at least every two years, however Pulsar recommend you return your instrument annually to us for recalibration and in return we will extend your product warranty up to 7 years. All instruments leave Pulsar Instruments professionally calibrated and are supplied with a valid calibration certificate to international standards.

No. Noise dosemeters record sound levels (decibel levels) they do not record actual sounds or conversations.

The Pulsar NoisePen can be pre-programmed to record personal sound exposure for upto 30 hours; you can programme the meter to start and stop and start again, giving you a full weeks worth of measurements. The Noise Dosimeter System must be started and stopped at the beginning and end of each day; it will give you a full day of measurements, they can then be put on charge overnight for the next day.

The Pulsar NoisePen measures LAeq, LCPeak or LZPeak with Fast, Slow or No time-weightings in the range of 70-140dB(A) and 90-143dB(C). The Noise Dosemeter System at a 3dB exchange measures LAeq, LEX,8h, LAE, %Dose, Exposure, Estimated %Dose, Estimated Exposure, and at 4 and 5dB exchange it includes LAVG, TWA, %Dose, Estimated %Dose. The range is 70-130dB(A) and 120-140dB(C).
