Noise at Work Regulations – making sense of them & measuring sound

Tips on how to measure sound and manage the noise measurement process

Join the noise experts Pulsar Instruments on their face-to-face training courses and gain vital insight into how to manage the noise measurement in the workplace under the Noise at Work Regulations.

The one-day courses, delivered by Pulsar Instruments, are intended to meet the needs of those new to noise at work measurement or in need of a refresher. This course is particularly suited for those safety practitioners who have recently purchased a new sound level meter or a noise dosimeter system or who are thinking of purchasing new noise monitoring equipment and would benefit from practical guidance on how to measure sound and expert noise at work advice.

The aim of the course is to raise awareness of noise as a risk, increase safety practitioners’ knowledge of how to monitor noise and the current legislation together with encouraging safer behaviours and correct use of hearing PPE.

The 50 years old noise measurement products manufacturer has had extensive experience with workplace noise measurements through direct contact with HSE professionals around the world since 1969 and has forged a strong reputation in the field.  The course reflects this expertise in a way that is accessible to all.  Enough information is presented to allow sensible noise measurements to be made; the basic theory is limited to that which is vital to understanding the measurement process. This year there will be a greater emphasis on the practical workshop so attendees can come away knowing exactly what to measure, where, when and how. Attendees will also have an opportunity to look at what to do with the measurements once taken including how to make HSE compliant reports.

The actual process of how to measure sound is covered in some detail so that the requirements of the UK Health and Safety Executive and the Noise at Work Regulations, can be fully covered. The latest EU Directive on noise at work, effective from April 2006, requires that the noise levels be lower than the previous permitted levels, which affected the hearing of too large a proportion of the working population.

Even at the new lower action levels, a significant number of people will still have their hearing affected and hearing damage, once caused cannot be cured. This last Directive will add cost to a large number of businesses, from the increased use of PPE, extra health monitoring, new building works through to replacement of noisy machines.

Current course dates are:

  • Wednesday 13 March 2019 – National Railway Museum, York
  • Tuesday 11 June 2019 –  Birmingham Science Museum
