Nova Basic Sound Level Meter

High-performance decibel meter without the high price tag!

The Pulsar Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is the perfect instrument for carrying out basic noise level assessments in the workplace. Available in both Class 1 and Class 2 models, it ensures precise measurements and simultaneously measures the fundamental parameters required to comply with international noise regulations. The Class 2 meter is perfect for general noise monitoring, while the Class 1 model provides increased accuracy for environments requiring stricter control.

Designed for Precision and Ease of Use

The Nova complies with IEC 61672-1:2013, guaranteeing accurate and reliable readings. The bright TFT display ensures clear visibility in any environment, while the soft-touch keypad and intuitive menu system make navigation effortless. This meter simultaneously captures A, C, and Z frequency weightings, along with Fast, Slow, and Impulse time weightings, providing a comprehensive measurement of Sound Pressure Levels.

Ideal for Professionals in Various Industries

From basic noise level assessments to fire and emergency alarm testing, the Pulsar Nova provides reliable and compliant noise monitoring. The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is also ideal for sound system installations and vehicle noise measurements, making it a versatile choice for professionals in various industries. The Nova series is also upgradeable, allowing you to add new features over time to meet your evolving needs.

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is available as a Class 1 or Class 2 meter and can be purchased on its own or as a complete kit that includes the meter, an acoustic calibrator, and a carrying case.

Class Options

A Class 1 sound level meter is slightly more accurate than a Class 2 model. For most environmental noise measurements, we recommend a Class 1 meter, as it offers better performance at higher frequencies and provides added confidence when presenting results for legal or regulatory purposes.

The sections below outline the basic operation of the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter. For full instructions, please refer to the user manual.

Powering Up

The Nova uses six AA batteries, providing over 30 hours of operation. Fit quality alkaline or lithium batteries and replace the cover securely. Press the power button. The display will light up, and the instrument will start on the last view used. The bright TFT screen adapts automatically to your environment for clear readings in any lighting.

Calibrating the Nova

Before starting your measurements, select Menu > Calibrate, then place the microphone fully into the acoustic calibrator cavity and follow the on-screen prompts. The Nova automatically checks the calibration level and applies any necessary correction. Repeat the calibration at the end of your session to ensure accurate measurements.

Starting a Measurement

Press Start to begin a measurement. The Nova Basic continuously measures sound pressure level (SPL) and displays the current level along with the maximum sound level (Lmax). Use the up and down arrow keys to change the frequency weighting between A, C and Z. Changing what is displayed does not affect the measurement.

Stopping the Measurement

Press Stop to end the measurement. The measurement is ready for review on the instrument.

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is ideal for quick spot checks, installation testing, and basic noise surveys. Itโ€™s particularly useful for fire alarm and audible warning system testing, where the Max reading shows the highest sound level reached during a test.

Workplace Noise

Inย workplace environments, the Nova Basic provides a fast and reliable way to check machinery or process noise levels without the complexity of a full occupational noise assessment. It helps identify areas where noise may approach action levels so that further measurements or controls can be planned using more advanced equipment.

Environmental Noise

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is ideal for basic environmental noise checks and general nuisance investigations. With its wide measurement range starting at 20 dB(A), itโ€™s suitable for checking background noise and assessing common environmental noise sources, such as road traffic, passing trains, and general activity in the surrounding area.

Classroom Noise

Inย educational settings, the Nova Basic enables staff to quickly and easily monitor noise levels. Itโ€™s ideal for identifying classrooms or areas where noise may interfere with concentration or teaching, helping schools take practical steps to create calmer learning environments.

Construction Noise

Onย construction sites, the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter offers a simple way to check that equipment, tools, or activities remain within acceptable limits. Its portability makes it ideal for supervisors who need to conduct regular spot checks and monitor noise levels across the site.

Hospital Noise

The Nova Basic can help teams in hospitals and healthcare settingsย identify sources of unwanted noise that may affect patient recovery or staff wellbeing. Itโ€™s ideal for quick checks around wards and corridors, helping ensure that noise levels remain comfortable and within recommended limits.

Office and Call Centre Noise

Inย offices and call centres, the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter provides an easy way to assess background and equipment noise. Highlighting problem areas where sound levels are too high for effective communication supports a healthier, more productive workspace.

Vehicle Noise

The Nova Basic is perfect for basic vehicle noiseย checks. It can be used to verify the sound output of engines, exhaust systems, or other components during maintenance or inspection, helping confirm that noise levels remain within acceptable limits.

  1. Global Training Providers

Delivering first class Occupational Health and Safety consultancy and training requires constant attention to detail, forward thinking and the ability to supply your clients with the best possible service, package and relationship. As a business we have key clients within logistics and the commercial world. As you well know winning these contracts and maintaining them is all down to supplying the customerโ€™s needs in a bespoke manner. I genuinely believe that this is only achievable delivering the best possible service to the customer and understanding their specific requirements and finding solutions to tailor to their industry. On behalf of GTP Ltd (Global Training Providers) I would like to thank Sarah, Mike and the rest of the Pulsar team for a fantastic, Professional first class service you provide. From the initial telephone conversation to Pulsar where I spoke to the technical staff who were polite, professional, friendly, attentive and efficient in meeting the customer s requirements was impressive. Sarah you have an extensive knowledge base of all Noise Metering equipment and were able to direct GTP Ltd to specific noise meters required for the business in a commercial and environmental capacity. The follow up sales by yourself and Mike including the one day familiarisation course with the equipment was just superb. Your wealth of knowledge in the acoustic world, professionalism, commitment, passion and experience really did shine through. You demonstrated to me what a truly professional company Pulsar Instruments really are by supplying quality built precession instruments (which have been utilised in many trying conditions since). The after sales and technical advice supplied since has been invaluable. To be a customer and experience such a fantastic start to finish service like this is not only rare in today s society but a true credit to Sarah Brack and her team.

    Thank you very much โ€˜Pulsarโ€™
