Description

Pulsar Nova Customers

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is an entry-level sound level meter for straightforward sound pressure level (SPL) measurements. The Nova complies with IEC 61672-1:2013 and is available as a Class 1 or Class 2 meter, with Class 2 suitable for general noise monitoring and Class 1 providing the increased accuracy required for certain applications or regulations. The Nova Basic measures Lxy, Lxy Max, and Lxy Min with simultaneous A, C, and Z frequency weightings and Fast, Slow, and Impulse time weightings.

Suitable for basic noise level checks

The Nova Basic is ideal for basic noise level assessments where simple SPL readings are required. It covers a dynamic measurement range of 20 dB(A) to 140 dB(A) and is suitable for basic sound level checks, such as machinery checks, alarm verification, vehicle noise spot checks, and quick workplace noise assessments.

Straightforward operation with a robust design

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter has a robust die-cast aluminium casing, making it ideal for use in a variety of environments. Its bright TFT display remains clear in a wide range of lighting conditions, and the soft-touch keypad and intuitive menu system make navigation effortless. All frequency and time weightings are measured simultaneously for ease of use, and the included alkaline batteries typically provide more than 30 hours of battery life, allowing the meter to be used continuously for extended periods.

Data logging and licence-free reporting software

The Nova includes data logging as standard, storing measurements on its 8 GB memory card. Data can be easily downloaded to our licence-free AnalyzerPlus software for analysis and reporting.

Optional upgrades and other Nova models

The Nova Basic can be upgraded at any time after purchase, allowing additional functionality to be added as requirements change.

For occupational noise and environmental noise assessments that require additional functionality, the Nova range also includes the Nova Noise at Work and Nova Environmental sound level meters.

Product Options

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is available as a Class 1 or Class 2 meter and can be purchased on its own or as a complete kit that includes the meter, an acoustic calibrator, and a carrying case.

Class Options

A Class 1 sound level meter is slightly more accurate than a Class 2 model. For most environmental noise measurements, we recommend a Class 1 meter, as it offers better performance at higher frequencies and provides added confidence when presenting results for legal or regulatory purposes.

Instructions

The sections below outline the basic operation of the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter. For full instructions, please refer to the user manual.

Powering Up

The Nova uses six AA batteries, providing over 30 hours of operation. Fit quality alkaline or lithium batteries and replace the cover securely. Press the power button. The display will light up, and the instrument will start on the last view used. The bright TFT screen adapts automatically to your environment for clear readings in any lighting.

Calibrating the Nova

Before starting your measurements, select Menu > Calibrate, then place the microphone fully into the acoustic calibrator cavity and follow the on-screen prompts. The Nova automatically checks the calibration level and applies any necessary correction. Repeat the calibration at the end of your session to ensure accurate measurements.

Starting a Measurement

Press Start to begin a measurement. The Nova Basic continuously measures sound pressure level (SPL) and displays the current level along with the maximum sound level (Lmax). Use the up and down arrow keys to change the frequency weighting between A, C and Z. Changing what is displayed does not affect the measurement.

Stopping the Measurement

Press Stop to end the measurement. The measurement is ready for review on the instrument.

Applications

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is ideal for quick spot checks, installation testing, and basic noise surveys. It’s particularly useful for fire alarm and audible warning system testing, where the Max reading shows the highest sound level reached during a test.

Workplace Noise

In workplace environments, the Nova Basic provides a fast and reliable way to check machinery or process noise levels without the complexity of a full occupational noise assessment. It helps identify areas where noise may approach action levels so that further measurements or controls can be planned using more advanced equipment.

Environmental Noise

The Nova Basic Sound Level Meter is ideal for basic environmental noise checks and general nuisance investigations. With its wide measurement range starting at 20 dB(A), it’s suitable for checking background noise and assessing common environmental noise sources, such as road traffic, passing trains, and general activity in the surrounding area.

Classroom Noise

In educational settings, the Nova Basic enables staff to quickly and easily monitor noise levels. It’s ideal for identifying classrooms or areas where noise may interfere with concentration or teaching, helping schools take practical steps to create calmer learning environments.

Construction Noise

On construction sites, the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter offers a simple way to check that equipment, tools, or activities remain within acceptable limits. Its portability makes it ideal for supervisors who need to conduct regular spot checks and monitor noise levels across the site.

Hospital Noise

The Nova Basic can help teams in hospitals and healthcare settings identify sources of unwanted noise that may affect patient recovery or staff wellbeing. It’s ideal for quick checks around wards and corridors, helping ensure that noise levels remain comfortable and within recommended limits.

Office and Call Centre Noise

In offices and call centres, the Nova Basic Sound Level Meter provides an easy way to assess background and equipment noise. Highlighting problem areas where sound levels are too high for effective communication supports a healthier, more productive workspace.

Vehicle Noise

The Nova Basic is perfect for basic vehicle noise checks. It can be used to verify the sound output of engines, exhaust systems, or other components during maintenance or inspection, helping confirm that noise levels remain within acceptable limits.
