Schedule your Noise Dosemeter measurements in advance

By: Callum Wallis

The NoisePen wearable noise dosemeter by Pulsar Instruments is the ideal tool to assess whether your employees are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss by exposure to excessive noise. Worn on the shoulder, this cable-free pre-programmable dosemeter enables measurement and monitoring of the noise levels an individual is exposed to throughout their working day or shift.

The NoisePen can be pre-programmed up to 28 days in advance, so Health and Safety Managers do not have to be present to start or stop the dosemeter – simply complete the setup and then deliver it to the worker (you can even pop it in the post to them!) – this makes it ideal for workers who are located on remote sites, who work night shifts or work in areas that are difficult to access for example.

The NoisePen wearable noise dosemeter captures noise doses for over 30 hours so you can even pre-program it to start and stop daily enabling you to measure noise exposure of an employee over an entire working week if required. When the measurements are completed all the employee needs to do is return the NoisePen to you, where you can download the measurements and quickly and easily create compliant noise at work reports within a few clicks of a mouse.

The NoisePen:

  • Offers a powerful way to schedule noise measurements up to 28 days in advance
  • Overcomes problems of having to be next to a worker to start, stop and download the measurements
  • Allows you to deploy the dosemeters to remote sites or locations without interaction from the wearer.

Here are two examples to demonstrate its practical applications:

Scenario 1: Workers on remote sites, workers on the road or difficult to access areas

A company that installs and or maintains equipment around a country would find the NoisePen useful in measuring the exposure to noise of their employees throughout their working week. They would issue the NoisePen to staff on a Friday having pre-programmed it to start at the beginning of a worker’s shift on a Monday morning and finish at the end of the same day. The worker then returns the NoisePen the next day. Alternatively, the H&S Manager might schedule it to measure noise exposure every day of the working week, in which case the worker returns it at the end of the week.

Advantage: The H&S Manager has not had to be on-site with the worker to start, stop or download the measurements leaving him or her time to get on with other important jobs.

Scenario 2: Shift workers

The H&S Manager works 8.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday, but they want to measure the noise exposure of shift workers who start their shift 6pm on a Saturday for example. The H&S Manager simply programs the NoisePen to start at 6 pm on the Saturday and finish when the shift finishes. The Worker merely picks up the NoisePen together with any other PPE he or she needs to wear, attaches it with easy to use clips to their shoulder, carries out their work and then returns it at the end of their shift.

Advantage: The H&S Manager has not had to work outside of their normal working hours to perform accurate and reliable noise measurements. When they return to work on Monday, they download the measurements and use the Pulsar AnalyzerPlus software to produce their noise at work report.

Key features of the NoisePen wearable noise dosemeter
